Canon A1 with poor light or indoors without flash

When I used my canon a1 with the dianaf flash the images only seem to get the light in one side. It has also happened with my other slr cameras and I don't know why.
So this time I am using no flash.

I use a speed lite flash for my Canon and it works great. I have tried several flashes and it only catches more light on one side.
