Driving on the Transfăgărășan Highway was one of the highlights during my road trip around Romania. The road crosses the Făgăraș Mountains between the two highest peaks in Romania. There are many amazing viewpoints waiting for you, both on your way up towards the Bâlea Lake and down. I literally wanted to stop at each of them. Being there in the middle of October also meant that the top was already covered by snow, which was really beautiful.
There are many amazing places to see along the road: Bâlea Waterfall (which takes a steep, 30-minute hike to get to), Bâlea Lake (a glacier lake, on the top of the road), Vidraru Lake (the fifth biggest dam in Europe), and Poenari Castle (where you have to climb 1480 steps to reach it). If you are in the area I highly recommend going there! No wonder the highway is called the best road in the world by Top Gear, I enjoyed every second driving it. But don’t forget to check whether the road is open because it’s usually closed from November to June!
