More Light, More Fun with LomoKino LomoAmigo Mrmaart

We’ve had our fair share of amazing LomoKino moviemakers from this Community — all whose work have been featured and dearly appreciated!

But there are times when we’d stumble upon Community members who aren’t only active but are also, surprisingly, Lomography employees!

And so did we find mrmaart who is a Lomography co-worker. Someone who shoots and creates masterpieces on film but at the same time has served the crazy yet fun world of Lomography! Indeed, we love his work and his creative ideas not only when shooting Lomographs but when making LomoKino movies as well! With that, let us say hello to LomoKino LomoAmigo Maarten! :)

Tell us about yourself. What do you do for a living? What are your interests?

Hey! My name is Maarten and I was the Online Manager for Lomography Benelux for more than two years. Right now I’m hunting for new adventures and am basically in between jobs. Furthermore, I love art house movies, festivals and gigs, scuba diving, Amsterdam, cooking, a proper espresso machiatto and Ajax soccer games in the Amsterdam Arena.

Describe the LomoKino in five words.

A revolutionair analog master piece.

How did you like shooting with the LomoKino?

It’s different, and different things are mostly very exciting. It doesn’t smoothly fits in your hand while shooting, and the view finder fails hard, but the fact you are literally ‘rolling’ a movie is quite cool. Shooting analog stop motion movies never have been so easy, but another exciting feature is the use of the LomoKino as a regular camera. Bam, 144 photos on a standard rol of film. That is what I call cheap Lomographing! ;)

What or who has inspired you to purchase and use the LomoKino?

Honestly I never purchased the LomoKino myself, because I could borrow it anytime I wanted at Lomography. I also gave a few LomoKino workshops at some of the LomoRoadShows I’ve organized for Lomography in the Benelux. And together with kamiraze, sjaak & nout, maaikeschets and paramir we recorded a great big LomoKino movie during the Amsterdam Museumnacht 2011.

Any funny or strange encounters you’ve had with it?

Well, this Tipster by samjavor who motorized the LomoKino with a drill inspired me to do the exact same thing with a broken LomoKino from the Gallery Store Amsterdam!

I wrote my own Tipster about it. I’ve sent the movie in the Tipster to some of my friends, and basically all of them laughed like crazy.

If you could shoot any person alive or dead (or imaginary) with your LomoKino, who would it be and why?

I don’t really have a specific person I’d like to shoot with the LomoKino, but I do have a wish to shoot a LomoKino movie in a similar situation like how Ben Howard did in his video clip he made for the song “Keep Your Head Up.” The other day I was drinking beer in a bar with friends and discussed a potential plan to do the exact same thing Ben did with his band. I want to bring the LomoKino, make it waterproof somehow, and shoot a movie while I’m going down in our DIY slide! This is the clip Ben made:

Kindly share to us any LomoKino movie you love the most.

One of my favorite Lomographers is "Zoë a.k.a. undiscovered because she inspires me with almost all her work. She once made this great movie about love, which I truly love!

Any future plans with your LomoKino? More shoots or a full-length film perhaps?

Oh yes! The motorized LomoKino has to be tested very soon. I’m waiting for the sun to come out soon in Amsterdam, and then I’m [going] out with some slide film and a few friends to shoot a super steady quick LomoKino movie! Maybe while I’m boating the canals of Amsterdam or driving my bike (in that case I might need to assemble the camera or drill on my bike to at least keep on hand steering!) :D

Your advice to future LomoKino users.

LIGHT LIGHT LIGHT! This baby really needs lots of light, preferably sunlight. When the sun is shining big time you are even able to shoot a 64 ISO tungsten film if you want. For maximum xpro effects. Go for it!
