LomoPeople Malaysia: Mohd Ariff

11

He has the passion that’s hard to find in many people. A little bit older than me, still single and available (if he’s not hiding about his relationship status from me). Friendly enough with friends, enemies and strangers. Little bit funny, but sometimes friends don’t get it. Always dizzy when he has long distance road trips. And at this time, he can be proud of himself for holding a ‘lomoamigo’ title.

The first time I met him was on September 2, 2007 at Malaysia Tourism Centre, Kuala Lumpur. At that time, my friends and I were joining an art exhibition organized by Rantai. He was totally a stranger. He came alone, and didn’t bring any friends with him. If I’m not mistaken, he brought along his one and only toy cam, ActionSampler Flash.

On our first meeting, he asked a lot of questions about Lomography. There was simply nothing that could have made him stop asking questions. I bet that he never regret to have come to meet me and my friends at that time for just a couple of hours, even after traveling more than 200 kilometers from Ipoh to Kuala Lumpur. Before he went back to Ipoh, he mentioned that he will introduce to us his friends from his hometown who introduced him to Lomography. The rest is history.

Starting that day, I can see that his passion for Lomography continued. From my surroundings, I can see that he is one of the people in Malaysia who are very passionate about Lomography and will do anything to go out and shoot every day, anything, and any place. Just look at his lomohome and you will truly agree with me. The more than 8000 pictures and more than 40 awards he has in his lomohome really inspires me.

Four years ago, he used to ask me for tips and tricks. I just gave him what I know as I’m not a pro in photography. But today, the situation has changed; I now ask him for tips and tricks. And I guess not just me, but many people out there are doing the same. I might say that his name nowadays is well known by people who are into Lomography, especially in Malaysia. His skills in swapping films with people in other countries gave him an even bigger network in the Lomography scene.

Years passing by, from having just one film camera, he now has more than… I don’t know how many. Every camera that he owns always comes out with results. Average, good or awesome, he doesn’t mind.

I guess that’s it. I just hope to see everyone who are into this scene. Just be friendly so that you can grab more chance to gain knowledge, good relationships and also learn new things. Don’t get easily crestfallen with bad results after you develop your films. Keep on trying because someday, you will achieve something.
