Katya Leontyeva Shoots with the Supersampler

We would like to introduce you to Katya Leontyeva, our latest Lomo Amigo who’s gotten so smitten with the Lomography Supersampler camera – she’s got THREE of them!

Real Name: Katya Leontyeva

Lomography Alias: katya-leontyeva

Age: 24

Location: St. Petersburg, Russia

Tell us a bit about yourself:
Well… I live in St. Petersburg – homeland of Lomo. Now I work in a logistic company. I don’t know much about art photography, moreover I don’t understand it, but Lomography is my passion. It is true, pure and magical. I received a second diploma in graphic design and my degree work topic was Lomography of course. I like to participate in Lomo-competitions not only because of chance of winning (although fortunately it happens sometimes :) ), but the possibility to see a lot of good works and get inspired.

How long have you been a Lomographer? How did you get into it?
I got to knew about Lomography in 2003. But I didn’t become a Lomographer, I was only an “observer” and the only big event that I caught was an exhibition in main show-room in St. Petersburg – Manege. Some time later I forgot about Lomography and recalled only in 2007. Thanks to Lomography Embassy I bought my first camera and it all started…

Which of the golden rules do you follow the most?

My favorite rule is #9 – you don’t have to know afterwards what you captured on film. Because for me the process is more important than a result. With Lomography I learned how to treat own failures with ease.

The strangest, funniest, or hands-down greatest photographic/Lomographic encounter that you have ever had.
The most amazing thing I’ve photographed was when our river Neva frozen and everyone walked right over it! That was a really Lomographic feeling to change the point of view, to see your city from the water but not from the boat at the same time, to walk by feet under the bridge, to ride a bike on the ice…

If your photos shown here could have a soundtrack of three songs, which would they be?

  • Yellow – Coldplay
  • Octavio – Viva
  • Voce Bicycle – Memory Tapes

Which is your all time favorite Lomography camera?

My fav is the Lomo LC-A. It’s all the time camera. And I’m in love with the Supersampler, I have got 3 of them.

How did you did you come to be a Lomography Amigo?
Supersampler Showdown Rumble – I won it as well as gleby. We are in friendly relationships and I think it’s funny that we won in this category because this city where we live is gloomy and not sunny.

What is it about the Supersampler that tickles your fancy so?
It is impossible to think with Supersampler. It doesn’t have a any settings, viewfinder neither and you cannot compose a picture. That’s why it makes you feel free-minded. Once I went with my friends to Kiev. Next day after rough night we went to the main street. One of my friends had the usual digital camera, and another – professional camera. They were so tired that couldn’t force themselves to take out their cameras and make pictures. That time I appreciated Supersampler
because I just pressed the button and waved it all around. The pictures came unforgettable and that was so easy!

Which photo do you like most from this project?

I like it when a picture consists of 4 absolutely different frames, it makes some series that compose a “story” in your mind or a panoramic view where you see basic points and you can think out the rest part that “hides” between frames, and especially i like when a person appears on the one frame only, like in this picture.

Can you give a tip to other Supersamplers out there? What is your favorite Supersampler move?
Actually there is a move that a like very much: turn your Supersampler upside down and move from up to down (on the back side figures 1,2,3,4 should be in reverse order). In the result the sky will be at the lower frame, and the ground – at the top.

Your words of wisdom to other Lomographers?
Be active, open-minded, experimentive, liberated.. Lomography beautifies every ordinary moment of your life, don’t forget about that when you have doubts should you make a picture or not, and good luck!
