The DIY Journal Binding for your Analogue Lifestyle (Part 1)

7

Photos and journal writing share a common purpose for most people – they were created to preserve the memories in their own special way; pictures and words. But sometimes pictures are not enough to explain things, nor are just words. So, how about combining these two great creative concepts together?

You can quite easily pick up a neat and beautiful journal from the nearest bookstore without having a hard time, but it is just natural for a Lomographer to appreciate the DIY stuff more, being the big analogue lovers that we are. Besides, to have a journal which contains not only paragraphs but also photographs, well it’s pure common sense that those 'artsy' feelings will make it more wonderful. So, why don’t we make the journal ourselves with our own hands?

Tools You'll Need

These are the materials and tools you’ll need to get started:

  • Paper (for sure, you’re making a journal)
  • Cover for your notebook (you can use anything you possibly want, you might want to try fancy paper, leather, plastic wrap, fabric etc, just be creative!)
  • Thread/yarn to tie your journal (use any kind of strong thread, I recommend using the synthetic leather thread/cotton yarn/acrylic yarn)
  • Needle (any needle that will fit your thread, I usually use my tapestry needle)
  • Awl/Nails to make holes on the spine of the notebook (if you’re using nails, choose the small ones)
  • Cutter knife and the cutting mat
  • Paperclip
  • Scissors (not really necessary though, you can use your cutter knife)
  • Pencil

The Tutorial

In this video below, I’ll show you how to make the easiest, yet most interesting DIY journal using the simple bookbinding method. Trust me, it takes very little time and money to make, and it's definitely worth a try!

With your crafty-mind, you can turn this simple notebook into something more valuable by getting creative with the techniques and also the materials.
