Canon A1 with poor light or indoors without flash

When I used my canon a1 with the dianaf flash the images only seem to get the light in one side. It has also happened with my other slr cameras and I don't know why.
So this time I am using no flash.

The reason for the flash only lighting up half the frame will be due to the flash sync speed of your camera(s) some cameras shutters only open completely with enough time to expose the flash burst up to certain speeds. For example a Kiev 60 which has a fastest sync speed of 1/30 as it has a huge mirror and massive cloth shutter it can only open fully to the full frame size at 1/30 or the image will be over exposed. Where as leaf shutter cameras without a focal plane shutter like a hassleblad or bronica ets can sync at all speeds even upto 1/1000. If you search flash sync on google there are plenty of tutorial videos explaining it.

Hi there, thanks for the advice, I don't have experience with any of the cameras you've mentioned (I wish!) but knowing what the problem is is a good place to start, so I will ask google about flash sync. Thanks!
