Panjat Pinang (climbing the areca nut tree)

www.lomography.com/homes/hervinsyah/blog/100640-title One of tradition to celebrating Indonesia Independence Day, this time the 68th anniversary of our Independence Day. The areca nut splash with very slippery oil, so it took a lot of people to climb it & a lot of "victim" as a "stairs" =) to get a lot of prize at the peak of the tree such as biscuit, cigarette, t-shirt, cash money, etc. The value is not how much the prize they have it but the spirit of togetherness to reach the peak of the slippery areca nut trees, the cooperativeness between the climber, their willingness for being the stairs for other to get the peak. The spirit that plant by our ancestor when struggling to take over back our land from the colony many years ago.

I like the story behind this picture - no matter how many odds are in your way - stand together, help each other and have a lot of discipline. This is the history of many southeast Asian countries.
