For Patrice Baunov, film photography is an “intimate medium that shows the interaction between the photographer and his surroundings during a specific moment.” In this interview, our well-rounded newcomer from Berlin, Germany talks about his wide range of interests and how he applies Lomography’s “Don’t think just shoot” attitude on his photography and daily life.

Please tell us something about yourself and what you do.

I’m a 27-years-old social and cultural anthropology and film studies student. I would describe myself as an ever traveling, knowledge-and-experience-seeking soul who had already found a soulmate, my wife. I lived in different places like The Netherlands, Portugal, Germany, and studied various subjects as psychology, inclusive pedagogy, and educational science.

During the past three years I regularly traveled to Moscow and fell in love. I fell in love nine months ago with the film photography and old Soviet cameras while living in Lisbon. Now, I settled down in Berlin with my wife.

How did you find the Community and who/what convinced you to join?

To find this community is like an undeniable destiny for film photographers. I found it when I searched for info about films, cameras and tips. I followed the community for several months until I decided to finally join after I tried various platforms. The community always had the special ‘something’ that I didn’t find elsewhere. I’m more than happy and overwhelmed everyday by the work of others in this community.

As you have read the 10 Golden Rules of Lomography, what rule do you apply in your everyday life?

I guess I’m the Rule #10 type. “Don’t worry about the rules” because I have the same artistic approach to life with film photography. As an artist you shouldn’t worry about the conventional rules of your doings (as long as it doesn’t harm anyone) because then it would not be art anymore. And furthermore not worrying about the rules always brings something new and unexpected.

In this digital age, why still film?

Every taken photograph on film has its own personality. I consider film as an intimate medium that shows the interaction between the photographer and his surroundings during a specific moment. Also I like that you have to be more accurate about how and what you shoot because you only have 36 frames or even less.

What I really love about film is that you can endlessly experiment with it in ways that you will be never be able to do with digital. There’s a huge difference between the feeling of creating something with film and analog camera than with digital cameras, Photoshop and applications for “mobile phoneography.”

Your favorite analog camera as of the moment? Why?

At the moment my favorite camera is my LOMO Lubitel from 1953. I just love the look of it. I love the quality of the photographs of this small twin-lens box and I love how I shoot with it. It requires more attention and a good eye for sure, but it just blew my mind when I saw the results since I got with no experience with photography at all. This camera gives me quite an intimate feeling with the moment and the shot.

But in general I love old Soviet cameras. I have eight now.

What is the Lomographic camera you’d want to have someday?

I have my eyes on the LC-A 120 and the Lubitel 166+ because I just freak out with the awesome medium format

Any song or movie you live by?

I would say the song “Everybody’s Free To Wear Sunscreen” by Baz Luhrmann quite describes my approach to life.

Share your current favorite Lomograph, could be yours or a friend’s. Why?

It shouldn’t be considered as narcissistic but I want to share one of mine because this lomograph was one of my more experimental ones. It is a multiple exposure I shot with a Zenit 11 and I just really love the outcome, the structures. It has something geometrical and architectural that still impresses me.

Any Community member you look up to? If so, why him or her?

That is hard to say because everyone in this community has his or her own special style which impresses me. So I would say its the collective creation and I look up to each of the individuals here.

What are you looking forward to in our Community?

I look forward to get more impressions and more tips to develop my skills and my photography. Also I want to participate more actively in the community by writing reviews, articles and tipsters from my own experiences.

Thank you Patrice for sharing your thoughts with us! Welcome to the community and we’re looking forward to seeing more of your photos!
