Amazing, no? Lomography and its photos are a perfect accessory to customize a Rubik's cube with a style 100% analogue. Let’s start building our own lomo cube!
You need:
- 1 Rubik’s cube.
- 6 printed Lomographs
- Scale
- Cutter or scissors (I used both)
- double faced tape
- Any software to divide the photos or a pencil to do it manually.
- Patience to play with it
Let’s start working:
1. * Grab your cube. * I was lucky that as I was thinking about this idea, I got two medium sized cubes. Personally I prefer the black one, but if it isn’t … You can get buckets of different sizes, choose the one you like.
2. * Select your photos. * Red, green, blue, yellow, orange and white. These are the classic Rubik six colors and are the ones used in my Lomo Cube. Dive into your file and looking Lomographs “monochromatic” you work for this. My selection:
It’s nice because each side shows a different photo, which gives photographic charm to the cube.
3. * Reframe and grid your Lomographs. * The first thing to do is measure your colored stickers. In my case, each square was 1.5 cm per side. So I should reframe my photos into squares of 4.5 × 4.5 cm and split into a grid of 3 × 3 squares, each square of 1.5 × 1.5 cm as I said. This process can be done in two ways:
A. Reframing with a computer program. I used Freehand, but you can use the one you manage better. To save impressions, I gathered my six squares and grids in a rectangle of 10 × 15 cm. and printed it as a normal photo.
B. Reframing by hand. If you are 100% analog no problem! Request copies of the photos you are going to use, take a ruler, a pencil and draw your grid. Be careful and go.
As I had two cubes, i printed twice – one matte and one bright paper. I recommend the two matte because they make less fingerprints.
4. * Cut and paste. * Start cutting squares and paste them into your Cube. I recommend you go face to face and have patience. Seems faster than it is, but worth it.
There you have your Lomo Rubik Cube !
Sounds like a precious object to decorate your library or your camera shelf. It can also be a nice gift and a unique way to display your photos. It is also a proof of the chromatic Lomography game. And obviously, a hilarious challenge that will engage you. Look how fast I am and my Lomo solving Rubik:
