Inside the Stronghold of Deva

The building works at Deva’s Stronghold started in XIII century with the purpose of creating a military fortress. Later transformed by Iancu de Huedoara in residential castle, it was extended and reinforced in the XVI, XVII and XVIII centuries, becoming one of the strongest fortifications in Transylvania. The stronghold was often sieged by the Ottomans in 1550, 1552, 1557. In 1784 Horea’s ultimatum was submitted to the nobles in the castle and in 1848 was the headquarters of the imperial aids which intervened against the Hungarian revolution. After being bombed in 1849, the stronghold became a ruin on the top of a sloppy hill.
