Give Your LC-A Some Fresh Threads: Replacing Your LC-A’s Leather Skin

2

If your LC-A’s leather skin is starting to look tattered, it’s sort of telling you it’s time to replace it. Follow this simple tipster on how to make your beloved LC-A look new(ish) again.

I didn’t have money to buy a shiny new LC-A+ so I bought a refurbished LC-A. The leather was pretty banged up so I decided to change it into this skin:

I liked how it looked but it lacked a leathery feel so I decided to replace the skin with leatherette. And it’s really easy to do! I’ll show you how.

What you need:

  • Leatherette (or leather)
  • Cutter or scissors
  • Rubber-based adhesive
  • A screwdriver

Unscrew the cover of your LC-A and peel out the old skin.

Do not lose the screws! They’re really tiny.

Cut out your leather/leatherette. You can base it on your LC-A’s old skin (tracing it out works, too.)

You’ll end up with these three pieces.

Apply glue on the leatherette and spread it evenly. I used contact cement here. Set aside the leatherette and apply glue on your camera as well.

Now, stick the leatherette onto your LC-A. Make sure to smooth it out and don’t forget to press on the edges so it would look neat and evenly stick to the surface.

Put the cover back on and do the same procedure for the back part of your camera.

Let it dry. If you’re using contact cement, it will take overnight to dry fully.

Another tip: You can also use materials other than leatherette and leather! My previous skin was actually just a decal.

Enjoy your “new” LC-A!

I guess this is the closest I could get to the Russia Day edition.

First it is shameful to pay so much for a camera and have it delivered with banged up leather. If this was a refurbished Lomography LCA I would send it back... They are well overpriced to send something in that shape. Second, there a guy on Ebay that makes lots of skins in leatherette, I bought some in red and they look as stunning as your camera looks now =)

I don't think I could bring myself to mod my LC-A. It helps that it's in perfect condition, but I think that even with scratches and scrapes I would rather keep it as nature intended.
