TEN AND ONE Awards Residency Week: Meet the Lomographers (Part 1)

16

In 2016, we launched the first ever TEN AND ONE: Annual Lomography Photo Awards — one of the biggest photography competitions in the experimental photography scene. As part of the grandiose prizes, we randomly selected lomographers out of the 110 winners to spend a week-long artist residency at the Lomography HQ in Vienna. Get to know the participants in this short interview.

Montague Fendt (@montagu)

Tell us a bit about yourself.

My name is Montague, but everyone calls me Monty. Photography is my greatest passion since I was a kid. I have always been an extremely competitive person in many aspects of my life. First I was skateboarding, then kickboxing, followed by many years of professional motorcycle racing in Asia. All were hobbies that I started, became extremely ambitious and to an extent successful in, but after a few years they faded away, still having a place in my heart but as a memory rather than a desire. Except photography. Photography has been with me since I can remember, the camera being a natural extension of my eye. It is what makes me happy, what keeps me balanced, what I do in my downtime. I studied Film and Sinology at the University of Zurich and later moved to Beijing for an exchange year. An inspiring time passed, lots of lessons learned, when I decided to stay in Beijing and make it my new home. Nowadays to make a living, I direct and shoot loads of advertising, documentaries and the odd film. But as a contrast in this highly stylized, controlled and sometimes visually tiring environment, I embrace analog photography to give me what I lack in my work, a way of visualization and pure expression of my own ideas. In my photography work, I follow a fairly strict ‘one-shot’ policy (no pun intended to Golden Rule No.6 and No.8! everyone is different). Although I believe to be an very experimental photographer, I usually have a pretty good idea of how I want a picture to turn out, what I want to express with it and then do the best I can in getting it captured at first try. In a way it is again a personal test for myself if I can make that picture that lies in my head come to life.

What are the cameras, films, and other gear that you'll bring to the Residency Week?

I will definitely bring my Chamonix 4x5 large format camera with a fresh pack of Provia 100F and Kodak Tri-X 320. It is my favorite tool at the moment and as I currently still work on my ‘Suns’ project, I aim at getting a few sunrises and sunsets done while in Vienna. Apart from that, I heard rumors that we can borrow any Lomography camera we wish and get a bunch of film to play with? Well, if that’s the case then I will not bring any additional cameras, just borrow an LC-A and have fun with it for a week!

Free-Spirited, non-judgemental, unrestricted

Tell us a bit about yourself.

My name is Roberto and until a year ago I was a full-time photographer at a local studio, then I decided to quit because I didn't have enough time to make the photographs that I enjoy and now I photograph in part time (mostly weekends) and the rest of the time I'm an instructor at a gym.

What are the cameras, films, and other gear that you'll bring to the Residency Week?

All of them. It's very hard for me to choose cameras for vacation so this will probably change but I think I'll bring a LC-A, a LC-Wide, Olympus XA4, Nikon L35AF and a reflex to use with the Lomography lenses. I'll also bring lots of film, most of it will be expired slide films and some black and white.

Freedom, experimentation, fun.

Yoshitaka Goto (@gocchin)

Tell us a bit about yourself.

My name is Yoshitaka Goto from Gifu, Japan. Gocchin is my nickname, which is also my LomHome. I work for a global logistics company and I'm a film photographer, too. I usually have a couple of solo exhibitions in Japan and join art fair including overseas ones. My works are used as artworks on commercial things. I love making double or multiple exposures using the LC-A+ with Splitzer.

What are the cameras, films, and other gear that you'll bring to the Residency Week?

Camera: LC-A+, LC-W, Lomo'Instant Automat Glass, Canon EOS5 for the New Petzval Art Lens
Film: Kodak E100VS, Fuji Velvia 100, Lomography Color Negative 400 and more!

Edward Conde (@edwardconde)

Tell us a bit about yourself

I’m from Los Angeles area in California. I’m a husband and father of two beautiful daughters. I work in the IT field. Photography is a passion and obsession some would say. My photographic style is unobtrusive and observer-like. I like to hang back, watching the scene as it presents itself in front of me. I’m obsessed about “Capturing Life” around me. I have been shooting film for just a little over three years and have enjoyed every minute of the journey. I shoot different film formats from instant to medium format and I develop all my film at home. I’m looking forward to shooting film for a very long time.

What are the cameras, films, and other gear that you'll bring to the Residency Week?

I will be bringing a few cameras with me GA645, LCA120 and a couple of point & shoots. As for film, I am bringing a range of BW film and Color film I have been saving up for special occasions. This is one of those occasions!!!

Serendipitous, expressive, adventurous

Claudia Sajeva (@-dakota-)

Tell us a bit about yourself

I am Claudia, born and raised in Palermo (Italy), a visual arts lover since ever. I grew up in a family with the passion for old movies, music and arts, this has greatly influenced my growth and my choice of studying architecture. Since I was a child I loved drawing and painting and at the age of 13 I started to develop a passion for photography, I used a Nikon 35mm point&shoot. In 2004 my parents gave me my first digital camera but in 2009 I discovered Lomography and come back into film photography. I like to try different techniques, play with my gear and experiment a lot. I love vivid colors but I prefer shooting black and white films, mostly because I can develop and print it in my dark(bath)room. When I shoot with square format I focus a lot on a perfect composition and sometimes I choose panoramic cameras for street photography. In the last few years I started to make short music video because I like to create a connection between music and images and one of my dreams is to make a video with a super 8 camera.

What are the cameras, films, and other gear that you'll bring to the Residency Week?

This is a very difficult question! At the moment I have divided some of my cameras into three categories, but it is not excluded that at the end I change idea or bring them all!

For sure: Lomo'Instant Automat Ten&One special edition and my loyal LC-A+ (even though it is in a bad state and I hurt my fingers every time I rewind the film).

Undecided between: Horizon 202, Lubitel 166+ and Yashica Electro 35GT.

I’d love but I don't want to exaggerate: A multilens camera, LomoKino, Diana+ and Holga WPC120.

I'll bring different color and black&white films and something I have kept for a great occasion, my last two Lomography x Tungsten and an expired Fuji Provia 100f 35mm.

Define Lomography in three words.

Experimentation, variety, community.
