Hazy Days

Shooting a scene covered in heavy fog or smoke can result in dramatic photographs, even more so when done using black and white films.

For this challenge, take advantage of nature's softbox and shoot stunning images that use fog or smoke as a creative element. Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Be an early bird: Fog tends to form on frigid mornings and dissipates rather quickly, too. So, think of a place in your neighboorhood that would look cinematic covered in haze and set up your gear there before the break of dawn.
  • Follow the light: While fog may soften the lighting, it also makes streaks visible from concentrated light sources. Think of how the forest looks like on a misty day or how the street lamp seems to be blasting light during a hazy night.
  • Control the mood: Whip out a smoke machine and take charge of how the final photograph would be.

Each participant may submit up to 10 black and white images. This competition serves as the qualifying round for the Monochrome category.
